Dennis' Trade Tip: The BT Renown can use standard telephones (SLTs) but these must have earth recall enabled to allow external calls to be made. This is because you have to press the recall (R) button to get an outside line instead of dialling 9 as on most systems. If you press recall (R) and get unobtainable tone or engaged or silence, then your phone is probably set to time break recall (TBR).
